30,000 Strokes

Martin uses 30,000 strokes in an average day of swimming; believe me, I’ve counted. Actually, they’re more like punches. His opponent, the mighty Amazon, towers over him and surrounds him, but after 57 days of taking a pounding, he’s still fighting.

Today was by far the calmest of the last eight days, and Martin capitalized on the favorable conditions to log 76 km, his highest total in that span. Tomorrow, he’ll come to the famous fork of the Amazon, the Northern route going to Macapá and the Southern to Belém as the river begins to fragment into branches at the mouth before emptying into the sea.
